ENRICHMENT FOR ORANGUTAN’S CAGES IN THE AGRO KHATULISTIWA AMUSEMENT PARK

Bookmark and Share

A male orangutan named Kenthung, who has been entrusted by BKSDA to the Agro Khatulistiwa Amusement Park since 2004, was found injured On Monday (January 18, 2010). In the park he is kept in a two-point-five-by-three-meter cage, which is neighboring to long tailed macaques’ cage. He might have been attacked by the macaques living next door who came into his cage through a big hole on a broken partition, which splat the cage into two smaller cages.

The next day a COP’s team came and treated his cut as well as fixed his cage. They cleaned the cage’s floor and flushed it with antiseptic. Afterwards they relocated the long tailed macaques into another cage and got rid of the partition within Kenthung’s cage, so that he will have a bigger space inside it afterwards.

Furthermore COP also has set up strings in his cage and knotted them around on used tyres so that Kenthung would be able to swing around and ease the boredom. Although the enrichment is not many, Kenthung, however, will have a cleaner cage that has no stink.

All strings and tyres have been set up. And Kenthung has been placed back into his cage again. The COP’s team provided him with sticks and leaves for a warmer ‘bed’ at night. If he had dreamed during the night, he must have been dreaming that someday he would have a reunion with his mum and peers in the jungle and spent the warmest night in his mum’s cuddle.

The COP’s team encouraged the park’s administrator to provide Kenthung with good supplies of food and drink as well as warn the park’s visitors not to stop interacting with him. The administrator gave us a word that they would build a fence around Kenthung cage.
