COP RETURNS TO THE STREETS

Bookmark and Share

The Centre for Orangutan Protection brought another protest to the capital city. About nine COP's activists accompanied Christofel Sahabu, a senior inhabitant of Tumbang Koling village from Central Kalimantan, to call for a halt in further deforestation in Kalimantan island. The small group staged its protest at the HI Circle of Central Jakarta, Thursday almost noon, in the middle of one of the busiest junctions in the city, just below the Welcome Statue.

Sahabu, with two COP's activists, wore Dayak tribe traditional costume. With trickles of water under the feet from the water fountain nearby, they danced a tribal dance, drawing attention from passengers of thousands of vehicles waiting at the traffic light. The dance was a statement from Sahabu to appeal to the government and the public to pay attention to the alarming, continued, landclearing in the forests of Borneo.

A red 4-by-2-meter banner saying "Palm Oil Kills" glared to the public under the hot morning sun. Two activists wore orangutan masks, adding drama to the scene. Photographers and TV cameramen shooting pictures at them while traffic policemen and women busy conducting the traffic nearby.

In the street protest, COP reminded the public that the Ministry of Forestry's lack of concern to forests and orangutans had caused massive destruction of great trees of Kalimantan, the very habitat of orangutans. The continued demolition of the forests were mostly carried out by palm oil companies. The protest lasted about an hour.
