With a permit already in hand, PT Orangutan Habitat Restoration Indonesia (ROI) is preparing to release orangutans into Borneo jungles after years of being held in rehabilitation centers. The Forestry Ministry awarded a ROI license to restore 86,450 hectares of former timber concession area in East Kutai district, East Kalimantan, to be the new home for rehabilitated orangutans. “We target the gradual release to start in April 2011 at the latest,” chairman of Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) Togu Manurung told The Jakarta Post. There are currently 226 orangutans held in captivity in the BOSF rehabilitation center in East Kalimantan. ...
The Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) are a direct action group of Indonesian people who campaign to bring an urgent end to the destruction of our rainforests and the killing of orangutans. We focus on the cause of the problems as well as rescuing orphaned orangutans whenever we find them – which is often.
Our work takes us all over Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) and sometimes to Sumatra. We go wherever the most urgent problems need to be dealt with. Investigating forest crimes and confronting those committing them are all part of a day’s work for COP. COP also attaches a lot of importance to working with and empowering local communities who are the best people in the long-term to protect the rainforest (their source of their food and water) and the orangutans.
Helping orangutans we discover in terrible zoos is important to us. Providing food, water, enrichment, training zoo staff are all responsibilities undertaken by COP and no one else in Indonesia. To us, all orangutans matter and deserving of our respect and our help.
